Antique Cotton Lingerie Summer Dress, America, ca. 1913

This delicate Edwardian summer dress, dating to around 1913 and originating from America, is a beautiful example of the period’s celebrated lingerie dress style. These dresses take their name from the materials and techniques traditionally used in lingerie - light cotton, airy lace, fine embroidery, and decorative piping - all of which were originally associated with petticoats, chemises, and other intimate garments. Lingerie dresses were especially popular among younger women, prized for their freshness, lightness, and feminine detailing.
